Любопытно узнать: кто как борется с потускневшими со временем пуговицами, пряжками и прочей фурнитурой?
А 150 лет назад, как готовились солдаты к смотру?

1. Паста гои. Поискать надо в военторгах. Тряпочка натирается данной пастой и потом необходимая фурнитура ей трется.
2. Зубная паста. На старую зубную щетку, трем, смываем и потом отшлифовываем ветошью.

Ещё конечно многое зависело от командира полка. Вот например выдержки из записей по распоряжениям в 14th New York Heavy Artillery

Circular, Ft Richmond [Staten Island, New York Harbor], Jan 24, 1864:

“The attention of company commanders is again called to the condition of their companies. Each company must be divided into squads, and each squad must be placed under charge of a non-commissioned officer. Each non-commissioned officer in charge of a squad will be strictly held accountable for the appearance of his men. He will see that his men after Reveille fold up their bedding, wash their face, and comb their hair. Before inspection and detail for Guard mounting and Parade each non-commissioned officer will see that his squad brushes their clothing, blacks their shoes, belts, accoutrements, and cleans their trimmings, trimmings will always be taken off before cleaning. The dress coat must only be worn for Guards, Drills, Dress Parades and Inspections, at all other times when not on duty, the blouse. The men should be taught to keep it in their knapsacks, neatly cleaned-also one pair of pants for all the above named inspections.

"The overcoat should be neatly rolled up in a uniform manner, clothing also neatly packed in a uniform manner for all-unless otherwise ordered on Sunday morning inspections, the knapsacks will be paraded in the company quarters in front and at the feet of each man opening outwards. Whenever any officer inspects company quarters the 1st Sergeant will always precede the Inspector and give the command ‘Attention!’, when all men will stand in their place and salute according to the Regulations, standing at ‘attention’ until the Inspector retires. Caps will not be taken off excepting when enlisted men enter an Officers quarters or office. Men must be particular in saluting to have the palm of the right hand to the front, fingers closed and together, touch the right side of visor of the cap, and then drop the hand naturally to right side.

"Company commanders will immediately report to Major Job C. Hedges 14th N.Y.V. Artillery and obtain from him the necessary instructions in reference to packing knapsacks and folding bedding +c +c. Each company commander will also publish written instructions under his direction to be posted in each set of quarters in both stories, for the necessary police, instructions of men, and in everything that usually appertains to men in Quarters. A copy of these instructions will be posted in each set of Quarters as above ordered.

"Accoutrements will not be taken off ‘till after the Inspection of Quarters.

"By order of Col. E. G. Marshall, Commanding 14th N. Y. H. A."

Special Orders No. 9, Head Quarters 14th N.Y.V.A. Fort Richmond, Jan 15th 1864: “The attention of all Officers of the 14th N.Y.V.A. is hereby called to the fact that nothing but the prescribed and undress uniforms will be allowed. By order of Col. E.G. Marshall.”

Circular, HQ Ft Richmond Jan 15: “The attention of company officers is hereby called to the following regulations for the dress of enlisted men of this command; on fatigue duty and drill the blouse and not the dress coat will be worn. Dress coats to be worn on guard, parade, and at company and battalion instructions, until further orders, and overcoats will be invariably worn at guard and parade.”

Circular, Jan 15: “Company commanders will see that the enlisted men of their commands have the cross cannon and number of the Regiment on their caps. If the men have lost the number or cross cannon a requisition will immediately be made and charge to the men who are resupplied.”

Special Orders No. 9, Jan 15: “Officers and non-commissioned officers in charge of detachments on artillery drill will be held responsible for the soiling or injury of casements by the men in the use of tobacco.”

Special Orders No. 22, HQ 14th NYVA, Jan 16: “Until further orders there will be allowed daily two passes for enlisted men of each co. these passes to be in the Adjutants office before 10 o’clock the previous day.”

Circular, Ft. Richmond, Jan 18: “I. It has been observed by the Colonel Commanding that the commanders of companies pay but little attention to the appearance of their men. A change must take place immediately. In future company commanders will see that the men before marching to guard mount, parade or inspections are in proper shape; that the cap boxes are upon the body belt next the plate; that the tompions are taken out and placed beneath the belt on the left of the plate; that the cartridge and cap boxes and belts are perfectly blacked and plates cleaned. II. Each company will be divided into squads and each squad be placed in charge of a non-commissioned officer who will be held responsible for the appearance of his men.”

Special Order No. 13, Jan 19: “I. The attention of company commanders is called to the fact that enlisted men are not allowed to smoke in the ranks, and that their coats are unbuttoned at company roll call. This practice must at once cease. II. Company commanders will take away all citizens clothing from the enlisted men of their respective companies, and turn the same over to the Quartermaster.”

Но это конечно не значит, что применимо ко всем было. Я склоняюсь,что все зависило от командира полка или бригады.

насколько я знаю хардкорные реконструкторы борются не с потускнением а с белском пуговиц и разными, порой не очень приятными способами, добиваются что бы они были покрыты патиной.

С этим у меня проблем нет: я давно потускнел.
Офф:У нас в армии такая же фигня была. Новобранцы из кожи вон лезли, чтобы довести форму и снаряжение до "поюзанного" вида.

Ну а вообще чистили абразивным порошком, с помощью щетки и специальной раздвижной планки с дырочками (на расстоянии пуговиц-чтобы грязюкой при чистке не изгадить мундир).
Кстати, в "Танцах с волками" это хорошо показано (где главный герой наводит марафет, собираясь в гости к индейцам).

Сейчас в канцелярских и художественных лабазах продается много разной патины, наносишь на металл-от копанины не отличишь!!! Эдакий "Набор Олдового Рекона"

У меня латунные пуговицы на шерстяном мундире давно потускнели,а на джинсовом мундире с квартирмейстера пуговицы из какого то говна и до сих пор блестят....

Хорошо у зуавов на форме пуговичек нету!!! Тускнеть нечему)))
